Vacuum or Air of Pipelines

NATA-Certified leak testing for new pipelines

Vacuum or air testing is a precise, non-invasive method used to verify the structural integrity and water-tightness of newly installed sewer pipelines. The process detects leaks caused by faulty joints, missing seals, or construction damage, ensuring pipelines are secure and reliable.

All testing is carried out in accordance with Section 73 requirements and Sydney Water-certified procedures, providing clear, compliant documentation for regulatory approval. By identifying issues before final handover or commissioning, vacuum and air testing guarantees that your sewer system is fully compliant and ready for operation.

Each open end of the pipeline is securely plugged, and either air is pumped in or vacuum pressure is applied. Once the system reaches approximately ±27 kPa, it stabilises for three minutes before timing begins. Technicians then measure the pressure drop to ±23.6 kPa, and record how long it takes to reach the ±7 kPa, comparing results against benchmarks in the WSA 02-2002-2.2 Sewage Code of Australia (Sydney Water Edition 1, Version 4).

What the Test Detects

  • Leaks from cracked joints or missing seals
  • Structural breaches that allow soil contamination or water ingress
  • Construction faults before final connection and handover

Testing Procedure

  • Seal all open pipeline ends
  • Apply air or vacuum pressure to ±27 kPa
  • Allow pressure to stabilise for 3 minutes
  • Time pressure drop to ±23.6 kPa, then to approx. ±7 kPa
  • Compare results to WSA 02-2002-2.2 standards

Key Benefits

  • Meets Sydney Water technical specifications and Section 73 requirements
  • Provides NATA-certified assurance of pipeline quality [Click here to view our certification.]
  • Avoids costly repairs or environmental damage post-installation
  • Supports compliance with council and utility regulations
