Flow & Pressure Testing

Flow meter

Flow and pressure testing of watermains and firemains is a mandatory commissioning process used to confirm that newly installed or upgraded pipelines meet required flow rates, operating pressures, and fire-fighting performance standards. This testing is essential for Sydney Water approvals, Section 73 compliance, and local council acceptance prior to connection and commissioning.

Hydrant flow testing and watermain pressure testing are carried out by controlled discharge from hydrants, scour valves, or test points while measuring static pressure, residual pressure, and flow rates. Pressure losses are recorded under live flow conditions to assess hydraulic performance and network capacity.

Pressure testing confirms the structural integrity of the pipeline, while flow testing verifies that the system can deliver adequate water volume for operational and emergency fire-fighting demands. These combined tests ensure the watermain or firemain is compliant, reliable, and fit for long-term service.

All testing is performed in accordance with WSA 03-2011–3.1 (Sydney Water Edition 2014) and relevant authority requirements. Results are documented and issued in flow and pressure testing reports, suitable for submission to Sydney Water, councils, and fire authorities.
